Arsene Wenger is tactically naive and no longer has the players at Arsenal to make his system work, says Gunners legend Paul Merson.
The Frenchman’s future at the Emirates Stadium remains in doubt ahead of their final game of the season in this weekend’s FA Cup final clash with Chelsea.
Wenger is out of contract this summer and says he’ll confirm whether or not he’s staying after Saturday’s showdown at Wembley, but Merson thinks his time at the club is up.
The former England international says Wenger’s tactics are no longer good enough and haven’t developed since a time when he had world class attacking players like Thierry Henry and Robert Pires in his ranks.
‘If they keep Wenger, I don’t see them getting close to the top,’ Merson told Sky Sports. ‘I just think tactically Wenger has lost it.
‘Sometimes you’ve got to play games like horses for courses. (Jose) Mourinho goes to places, sets up and makes sure they don’t get beat, Wenger does not play that game. He opens the game up and says: “You have a shot, we have a shot, best team wins.”
‘That doesn’t work anymore. It’s alright when you’ve got Henry, Bergkamp, Pires, Ljungberg, Overmars, Petit, Sol Campbell, Vieira, Lauren… saying: “You have a shot, we have a shot” is alright then, they’ll rip anybody to shreds! But not this team.’
